Umweltverantwortung und Wohlbefinden in europäischen Städten (6 ECTS)

Description

This course explores well-being and eco-responsibility in a European context. Using case studies, students will analyze how cities can be improved based on the criteria of joy, sustainability, diversity, eco-responsibility, and democracy. Through interactive discussions and critical thinking, they will develop strategies for future-oriented urban development. The course combines theoretical concepts with practical examples, encouraging a reflective perspective on sustainable development in Europe. A BiP is integrated in this module, meaning that students will travel to Lyon for 5 days to work with students from our partner university.Interdisciplinarity// The following interdisciplinary approaches and skills will be trained:Engineering & Sustainability: Examining sustainable infrastructure, energy-efficient technologies, and technical solutions to reduce carbon footprints while assessing environmental impacts.Urbanism & City Planning: Evaluating urban policies for sustainability, designing people-centered spaces, and analyzing transportation, green spaces, and housing through case studies.Architecture & Design Thinking: Exploring innovative, inclusive architectural concepts and their impact on joy, diversity, and democracy in urban life.Culture & Language: Examining how linguistic and cultural diversity shape urban communities, developing intercultural communication skills, and understanding language’s role in policy-making and civic engagement.Learning ObjectivesUnderstand Urban Well-Being & Sustainability – Explain how cities affect people’s lives and the environment and identify ways to improve them.Think Across Disciplines – Combine insights from engineering, city planning, architecture, culture, and language to create better urban solutions.Improve Cities Sustainably – Use real-world examples to suggest greener, more inclusive, and enjoyable urban spaces.Appreciate Cultural & Language Diversity – Understand how different languages and cultures shape communities and enhance communication in diverse settings.Develop Research & Communication Skills – Work in teams, analyze city challenges, and present ideas effectively.Didactic Setting// This course uses interactive and practice-oriented methods to achieve its learning goals:Case Study Analysis – Students examine real-world urban examples to connect theory with practice in sustainability, diversity, and governance.Interdisciplinary Collaboration – Working in diverse teams, students integrate perspectives from engineering, urbanism, architecture, culture, and language.Project-Based Learning – Students design city improvement plans, applying sustainability and well-being concepts.Discussions & Debates – Structured debates enhance critical thinking and communication on urban development strategies.Experiential Learning – Students engage with local urban environments through observations, surveys, or interviews.Reflective Learning – Self-assessment, peer feedback, and presentations encourage critical analysis and skill development.
