Students will be familiar with the history of structures and structural forms, with building materials and building methods. They will understand the concepts of structural engineering design, including safety concepts, loads and structural design codes. They will be able to convert a structural concept into a mechanical model to determine internal demand and to design and detail the components of the structure, with an emphasis on reinforced concrete as well as steel and steel-concrete composite structures.Content: History of structures; building materials; structural form and structural behaviour; actions on structures; structural reliability and codes of practice; mechanical modelling of structures; design of reinforced concrete structures
