Verankert zwischen Dokumentar- und Spielfilm, zwischen der Subjektivität der Autor_in und der Objektivität des Filmbildes, zwischen Bild und Ton, Bildnis und Wort – der Essayfilm entzieht sich gattungsspezifischen Definition. Jean-Pierre Gorin, selbst Filmessayist: „They come in all sizes, shapes, and hues – and they will continue to do so... How can one even attempt to draw its floor plan, sketch its history and catalog the idiosyncratic products that appear in its inventory?” Im Seminar werden exemplarische Essayfilme von Vertov, Franju, Marker, Godard, Kluge, Farocki etc. und Theorien des Essays diskutiert.
