In urban planning, the competition format is a widely used approach that offers numerous advantages when applied effectively. This format fosters inclusivity by involving various stakeholders and actors, ensuring diverse perspectives are considered. Additionally, it generates multiple ideas and solutions, often resulting in innovative and high-quality urban spaces.This seminar aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how planning processes - in focus the competition process - influence the creation of urban spaces. The course is structured into three main parts:Input Sessions:The seminar begins with introductory sessions where students will gain foundational knowledge about planning competition processes. A case study from Heidelberg, Germany, will provide a practical example of how planning decisions shape urban spaces.Readings and Discussions:In the second part, students will engage with academic literature and participate in discussions. The readings will explore insights from scholars on completed projects, emphasizing the interplay between planning processes and their outcomes in urban spaces.Research on Mega Trends in Urban Planning:In the final phase of the seminar, students will conduct research on mega trends in urban planning. Understanding these trends is crucial for designing planning processes that address societal needs effectively. This research will equip students with the knowledge to anticipate future challenges and opportunities in urban development.By the end of this seminar, students will have an understanding of planning competition processes and their impacts, along with insight into the societal and environmental trends influencing urban planning today.
